1955年10月28日，比尔•盖茨出生在美国西雅图一个律师的家庭。
小时候的比尔•盖茨非常聪明，但不善社交，在班里，他只和个别合得来的同学交往而且总想超过别人。他常说：“人的生命来之不易，应当有所追求。不管干什么事，都要干好，都要是第一。”
父母知道他的弱点，于是鼓励他参加“童子军”的活动。这活动比我们的“军训”艰苦多了，大部分在野外。有一次，还不到10岁的比尔•盖茨参加50英里徒步行军。两天之后，他的鞋破了，脚裂开了口子，走一步一个血脚印，每迈一步都十分艰难，疼得他大汗淋漓。但他不哭，而是咬着牙继续前进。老师看到这种情况，担心发生意外，就劝他上车。他却谁的话都不听，仍然顽强地前进。第三天，老师只好把他的母亲叫来，在母亲的劝说下他才上车。
在学校里，比尔•盖茨学习非常认真，特别是数学，一直都是全年级的第一名。当别人还在为小学的课程努力的时候，11岁的比尔•盖茨已进入西雅图收费最高的私立湖滨中学，而且在中学里就自学大学的数学了。
湖滨中学是美国最先开设计算机课的学校。比尔•盖茨特别喜欢玩计算机，他和别的孩子不一样，不仅玩游戏，而且喜欢钻研。那时候上机费非常昂贵，他就和小伙伴保罗•艾伦琢磨着怎么不花钱玩计算机。他们反复研究出了破坏计算机安全系统的方法，让计算机照常工作，但计时器却不走。这件事很快被计算机公司知道了。他们不仅没有怪比尔•盖茨，反而把他和艾伦请去，以免费用计算机为条件，请他们把发现的计算机的问题记录下来，以便公司改进计算机的设计。
比尔•盖茨不仅在学习、计算机方面比别人高，而且他还善于把知识变成财富。
有一次，湖滨中学的负责人找到比尔•盖茨，让他编一套课程安排程序。他编得非常好，直到现在学校还在使用。当时比尔•盖茨写了一份小广告：“我们为学校编制了一套计算机课程安排计划，经使用检验，质量绝对可靠，我们可以为您也开发一套，价钱很合理，每个学生只需收2－2.5美元。如果来信接洽，万分感谢。”他和小伙伴分别寄给很多中学，结果赚了上万美元。
有了这些成功的经历，还在上中学的比尔•盖茨和保罗•艾伦于1972年成立了“交通数据公司”，并收到美国“TRM公司”的邀请，帮助公司设计软件。由于这份荣誉来之不易，学校破例允许他俩不上课，全力去工作。他俩出色地完成了任务。比尔•盖茨虽然三个月没上学，在毕业考试中仍名列榜首，而且被著名的哈佛大学录取。
