开始的时候，除542岁长一脸漂亮白胡子的老施通福穿红衣服外(没有蓝妈妈回也是比较奇答怪，不知道蓝爸爸是怎么搞出这一堆蓝精灵来的？)，其他的小人长得都一模一样：蓝色的身子，圆圆的脑袋，四个手指，屁股上还长个尾巴根儿，身高约三个苹果，住在蘑菇形房子里。人们只能根据他们的特点、爱好、举止或者待人接物的态度加以区分。如戴眼镜的整天要训戒人(聪聪？)，爱打扮的老是在照镜子(蓝妹妹)，爱开玩笑的经常把一包不伤人的炸药放在礼品盒里分送给别人(乐乐要不是就是闹闹)；好埋怨的不论发生什么事，他总是说：“我讨厌这样。”(厌厌)
女性蓝精灵：
当时，所有的施通福都是男性。由于画家妻子提出指责，于是佩约就命令巫师格格梅尔去做一个女性的。巫师用了许多种不同配料，其中有蝰蛇的舌粉和鳄鱼的三滴眼泪创造出褐发、轻飘专横的饶舌女人，然后再把她变成一个讨人喜欢的金发施通福。这就是蓝妹妹，她有一头夸张的金色卷发，以及超厚的鲜红嘴唇，而且，她穿高跟鞋。
